Last afternoon my neighbors’ son returned from his school all excited and pronouncing a weird term and shouting out and assign others if they had got a test done. After asking his mother about the reason for the chap’s excitement, I learnt that apparently they had a routine test in school wherein one of the students was discovered to have dyslexia and the other has scoliosis. After a long conversation, the mother and I, decided to approach the school authorities, to hold a seminar with the students to maintain a balance amongst their peers and to train and motivate to help them with their work, do not rag them (as is the case with many children). The children should be made aware of the consequences, prevention, and ways to cope up with the disease; along with harmony amongst each other. Special care should be assigned to the ‘special’ children.
With scoliosis, a medical condition in which the spine takes a ‘S’ or a ‘C’ shaped curve, followed by other side effects such as diminishing lung capacities, restricting physical activities, pressure on the heart etc. There is no specific known cause, but it can be a due to a multiple range of factors, genetic being the most prominent amongst them. It is profusely found in women. The Scoliosis treatment includes physiotherapy, occupational therapy, self care, specific productive activities, bracing, surgery, thoracoplasty etc.
Dyslexia is a different condition altogether. In broader terms, it is a learning disability in which the person faces a lot of difficulty to read and decode sounds, languages, rapid naming or rapid sentences. The subtypes of dyslexia are auditory dyslexia, visual dyslexia and attentional dyslexia. A very peculiar fact about this condition is that it is not an intellectual or Intelligence Quotient disability. When you talk about Dyslexia Treatment, there is no particular treatment for this, but with regular activities, motivation and professional training, the condition can be brought under control.
There are many such conditions mental, physical or other specific conditions common with many adolescents. These may or may not be traceable at the early stages. But, there must be more efforts on the part of the schools and organizations to conduct routine checkups with these little flowers who have a long future ahead. There must be workshops with children to tackle and behave well amongst special kids amongst them.
